A $10 service fee applies to phone and in-person booking. This is a limited service – book online first. An in-person booking is dependent on there being space available.
Your hut booking is for any bunk bed, not for a specific bunk bed – select your bunk bed on arrival.
The bunkhouse is located at the top of the hill near the lighthouse and Visitor Centre.
There is no public transport on the island but, if you are staying overnight, your gear will be taken to the bunkhouse. When you get off the ferry, leave your gear in the trolley on the wharf and the island ranger will take it to the bunkhouse.
From the wharf, take either Wharf Road or Wattle Track to the bunkhouse (40 min).
The public passenger ferry runs Wednesday to Sunday. The ferry does not run on Mondays and Tuesdays – except on public holidays.
On non-ferry days the ranger may not be available to give you the bunkhouse briefing or assist with transport of bags. Do not book to arrive or depart on these days.
If you are staying in the bunkhouse and planning to arrive on your own boat or by water taxi contact the island rangers tiritirimatangi@doc.govt.nz at least two days prior to your intended travel with your expected arrival time.
There is no linen - bring your own sleeping bag, sheet and pillowcase.
There is no washer or drier. Hand washing only - bring your own washing powder.
Expect to share living areas and bunk rooms.
There is no public telephone - only emergency calls can be made. Cell phone coverage is good on the grass outside the bunkhouse.
Biosecurity requirements
All visitors staying on the island must complete and bring the biosecurity checklist.
Check ferry availability
Both the bunkhouse and ferry can get booked out in advance. Check both are available before finalising bookings.
Be prepared for ferry cancellations
Ferry sailings are subject to weather conditions. Call +64 9 916 2241 after 7 am on the morning of your departure to check if your ferry is sailing.
Bring an extra day's food in case you have to stay longer. You will not be charged for additional unplanned time spent in the bunkhouse waiting for the weather to settle. However, if you wish to leave by means other than the ferry, DOC is not liable for the cost.
On your departure day, if the weather is deteriorating, the ferry operator may cancel the day trip but do a single morning run for overnight visitors.
Check you are pest-free
Check, clean, and seal your gear to ensure you don't bring pests, soil, and seeds.
